About Course

SUS07: Changemakers for Sustainability This course is designed for Grade 7 students. In this course, students will start out to hypothesise themselves as changemakers. By learning from their peers and other members of the community, students will begin to put together plans for how they can make it to the world around them a safer place. Students will effectively address the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of the issue(s) being explored. Along with that, students will learn to complete a graphic organizer, arrange an interview, use a Venn diagram, use sketch note, and use the scientific method to solve a problem. …
SUS07: Changemakers for Sustainability This course is designed for Grade 7 students. In this course, students will start out to hypothesise themselves as changemakers. By learning from their peers and other members of the community, students will begin to put together plans for how they can make it to the world around them a safer place. Students will effectively address the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of the issue(s) being explored. Along with that, students will learn to complete a graphic organizer, arrange an interview, use a Venn diagram, use sketch note, and use the scientific method to solve a problem.  This is a 5-module full course according to Ontario Curriculum and requires a total of 110 hours including lectures, assignments, quizzes and exams. Each module has different learning objectives. In Module 1 students are exposed to the SDGs based on the issues that they choose to look at it in their community. The next Module gives the students an opportunity to look at an issue, discover why it is an issue, and come up with ways to do change for the future in regard to this issue in their community. It includes learning experiences that take advantage of issues/elements within the local community. Module 3 demonstrates the students the ways to become changemakers in society. Students will use sketch noting as a visual means to depict, organize and analyze information from interviews and build a Venn diagram to make comparisons and connections among their interviewees and each other. Finally, Students will use the scientific method to define the problem they are going to address, share their thoughts about the problem, hypothesize a solution to the problem, refine their solution, and develop an action plan.

What Will You Learn?

  • 1) What SDG-related problem exist in my own country?
  • In this lesson, students will learn about the Sustainability Development Goals (SDG).
  • Students will then make a list of problems that they see in their community and connect them to the SDGs.
  • 2) How have other people solved these problems?
  • In this part of the course, students will prepare a list of people they know or have heard about in their communities who have made transformation in their community. Therefore, the students will have “Role Models” to interview. The students will create foundational step towards becoming agents of change in their own towns, province, and country.
  • 3) How can I learn from other changemakers?
  • In this lesson, students will address how to conduct an interview so that they can conduct their own interview to changemakers in their communities.
  • 4) What I learned from other changemakers?
  • This lesson aims to help students better understand the characteristics of changemakers by reviewing their findings after having conduced interviews with changemakers. Students will use sketch noting as a visual means to describe, coordinate and investigate information from interviews and create a Venn diagram to bring about relationships and connections among their interviewees and each other.
  • 5) What can we do now?
  • Based on the interview they have completed and their class presentations, students will explore ways that they themselves can become changemakers in their communities and the world. Students will use the scientific method to define the problem they are going to address, share their thoughts about the problem, hypothesize a solution to the problem, refine their solution, and develop an action plan.

About the instructor

Dr. Ambareen Atisha is a student-centered Professor with expertise in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Departments, and a decade-long background of supporting students, developing academic instructional plans, and providing equitable assessments. She has been working as a Faculty Member at Sheridan Institute of Technology since 2017, at NSRIC Inc from August 2021 and at Humber College since January 2022 as Part-time Professor. Along with that, she worked as Lab Supervisor at Western University, London, On, Canada in 2017 (Feb -June). Moreover, she worked as a French Language Professor in Alliance Française de Dhaka from 2006-2008. Dr. Atisha’s main skills include: curriculum development, progress reporting, lesson planning, online and in-class teaching, faculty communication, designing, interpersonal skills, creating positive learning environment and continuous quality improvement. Dr. Atisha completed her B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2001 and she did her Diploma in French Language from Alliance Francaise de Paris, France in 2006. Dr. Atisha then completed her M.Sc in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2011 and PhD in Environmental Engineering in 2017; both from Western University, London, ON, Canada. During her higher studies at Western University, she successfully worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Graduate Research Assistant from 2008-2016. Dr. Atisha has performed extensive research in developing different remediation techniques for removal of emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals, estrogens as well as chlorinated hydrocarbons from surface water, groundwater, wastewater and soil. She has analyzed potential environmental impacts of organic pollutants through good knowledge in environmental standards and guidelines. She has 8 years of experience in using Instrumental Analysis Technique including Gas Chromatography, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Zeta Potential/ Particle Size Analyzer, FT-IR. Moreover, she is highly skilled in the utilization of different software for complex data analysis and data interpretation. She has prepared technical reports, papers for scientific journals as well as PhD thesis on basis of field investigation/survey/data, technical/scientific studies. Dr. Atisha’s experiences have resulted her in being commended for sustaining effective learning environment through prepared classes and relevant assignments. Consistently achieving post-secondary classroom management and academic goals is one of her assets, which she continues to use to ensure her students receive the best education.

A. What SDG-related problems exist in my own country?

B. How have other people solved these problems?
• Students will get an opportunity to look at an issue, discover why it is an issue, and come up with ways to do change for the future in regard to this issue in their community. • Depending on which issue the students will choose, there could be connections to humans. • Since they will try to solve the issue, they will foster empathy and respect for diverse groups of humans. • The lesson includes learning experiences that take advantage of issues/elements within the local community.

C. How can I learn from other changemakers?
• In this lesson, students will address how to conduct an interview so that they can conduct their own interview to changemakers in their communities. • This will teach them to work with real life case studies.

D. What I learned from other changemakers?

E. What can we do now?
• Students will use the scientific method to find solutions to one of the issues in their community. • They will develop an action plan, however there is no accountability to follow through their plan within this resource. • Students come up with their own issue to solve and their own ways to solve them. The suggested activities in the resource are self-directed learning.

Course Project
This is a final assignment worth 15% of the final grade. Students will pair with other students to make a group. They will research the particular SDG issue they have already selected in Lesson A and try to find the solution based on the interview of “Role Model” and variety of activities that will enrich their sources. They will prepare an analysis that describes their solution and give presentation in the class.
