About Course

This lesson demonstrates the students about the necessity to endeavour the utilization of renewable sources and curtail our effect on the environment. Students become concerned of the requirement to deal with the use of renewable resources so that upcoming generations will also get them for their purpose. This sort of change in way of life will have both positive and negative impacts on economic, political and cultural sectors along with the impact on the design of products and structures. This lesson demonstrates the students about the necessity to endeavour the utilization of renewable sources and curtail our effect on the environment. Students become concerned of the requirement to deal with the use of renewable resources so that upcoming generations will also get them for their purpose. This sort of change in way of life will have both positive and negative impacts on economic, political and cultural sectors along with the impact on the design of products and structures. Students will learn about environmental and external factors that affect individual and community health. The unit will demonstrate the calculation of “Foodometer” as well as “Green Buildings” and their positive impacts in the environment.  At the end of this course, students will learn to investigate consumer choice and its effects on the environment. Students will prepare a handout and give a presentation during class based on an extensive research about any environmental issue with its impact and solution on the society.

What Will You Learn?

  • 1) What is Sustainable Development?
  • In this unit, students will learn about Sustainable Development briefly based on their knowledge so far they have achieved. They will have a clear understanding about existing resources and keeping them for use for the future generation. Despite having some negativity, the unit finally will show the students the way to develop Sustainability by properly utilization of technology and social organization.
  • 2)What is Energy Conservation?
  • In this unit, students will learn the “Energy Conservation”, that is a concept of using energy efficiently with saving practices. Students will learn about different resources like oil. Coal, natural gas, biofuel etc. and their usage in different sectors. Moreover, the unit demonstrates wise management of agricultural soil and different energy sources.
  • 3) What are some examples of “Green Building” design practices in our community?
  • This unit will bring forward the issue of “Green Building” to the students from a different scale and a different view. Students will learn about Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy Generation, Water Efficiency, Stormwater Management and Superior Indoor Environment.
  • 4)How to Calculate your Foodometer?
  • This unit explores on the approximate locations of produce, using the province, capital cities as the farm location. In this instance, food mile calculations will be the distance from the “farm How to Calculate your Foodometer?

It provides students with opportunity to see where their food comes from and an estimation of how many miles their food travels.
  • 5) What does “Environmental Health” mean?
  • This unit basically talks about Environmental health, which can be integrated into sustainable development by refining environmental quality for the poorest populations with the greatest load of environmental diseases, by dropping revelations to air pollution in homes and villages from biomass burning, and offering clean water and sanitation. Students will recognize that some policies, practices, and technologies designed to promote sustainability and economic development may have inadvertent unfavourable environmental health effects; therefore it is crucial to make an effort to prevent these before they are executed.

About the instructor

Dr. Ambareen Atisha is a student-centered Professor with expertise in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Departments, and a decade-long background of supporting students, developing academic instructional plans, and providing equitable assessments. She has been working as a Faculty Member at Sheridan Institute of Technology since 2017, at NSRIC Inc from August 2021 and at Humber College since January 2022 as Part-time Professor. Along with that, she worked as Lab Supervisor at Western University, London, On, Canada in 2017 (Feb -June). Moreover, she worked as a French Language Professor in Alliance Française de Dhaka from 2006-2008. Dr. Atisha’s main skills include: curriculum development, progress reporting, lesson planning, online and in-class teaching, faculty communication, designing, interpersonal skills, creating positive learning environment and continuous quality improvement. Dr. Atisha completed her B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2001 and she did her Diploma in French Language from Alliance Francaise de Paris, France in 2006. Dr. Atisha then completed her M.Sc in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2011 and PhD in Environmental Engineering in 2017; both from Western University, London, ON, Canada. During her higher studies at Western University, she successfully worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Graduate Research Assistant from 2008-2016. Dr. Atisha has performed extensive research in developing different remediation techniques for removal of emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals, estrogens as well as chlorinated hydrocarbons from surface water, groundwater, wastewater and soil. She has analyzed potential environmental impacts of organic pollutants through good knowledge in environmental standards and guidelines. She has 8 years of experience in using Instrumental Analysis Technique including Gas Chromatography, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Zeta Potential/ Particle Size Analyzer, FT-IR. Moreover, she is highly skilled in the utilization of different software for complex data analysis and data interpretation. She has prepared technical reports, papers for scientific journals as well as PhD thesis on basis of field investigation/survey/data, technical/scientific studies. Dr. Atisha’s experiences have resulted her in being commended for sustaining effective learning environment through prepared classes and relevant assignments. Consistently achieving post-secondary classroom management and academic goals is one of her assets, which she continues to use to ensure her students receive the best education.

A. What is Sustainable Development?
• The unit demonstrate the development that accomplishes the requirements and objectives of the existing generation without negotiating the ability to fulfil those of future generations. • The unit also describes that the conception of sustainable development that imply some limitations imposed by the present state of technology and social organization on environmental resources. • The limitation on sustainable development is also caused by the ability of the biosphere to absorb the effects of human activities. • Finally, the unit shows that technology and social organization can be both managed and improved to make way for a new period of economic expansion.

B. What is Energy Conservation?
• Students understand the origins and environmental impacts of renewable and non-renewable resources, including energy sources like fossil fuels. • This lesson demonstrates to students about what energy conservation is using energy efficiently or energy saving practices. • It also demonstrates the necessity of conservation of the resources such as oil, coal, and natural gas for the utilization of future generations. • Students will understand that if all the resources are used up at the present, then future generations will not have those resources. • Students will learn wise management of agricultural soil and different energy sources • Students will know about community programs for recycling or reusing materials.

C. What are some examples of “Green Building” design practices in our community?
• This unit talks about the examples of “Green Buildings” in the community, for example, passive solar foyer, solar panels, vegetated roofs, high efficiency appliances, low water use devices, energy saving windows, controlled storm water run-off, products made from recycled materials etc.

D. How to Calculate your Foodometer?
• This unit develops an understanding of the environmental impact of travel. • Students will learn where does our food come from. • It applies basic math and problem-solving strategies. • It examines management techniques for fossil fuels usage. • It demonstrates an understanding of maps and their uses.

E. What does “Environmental Health” mean?
• This unit describes the concerns about the interface between human health and health stressors from the environment. Stressors may be physical, chemical, soil or food. • The unit also describes about the solutions that may include personal responses, political and legal processes, environmental controls and waste and materials management.
