Course Description:

This course on the constituents and analysis of crude petroleum is perfect for chemistry, chemical and petroleum engineering students or industry professionals including chemists looking to expand their knowledge. We will start by breaking down what exactly crude oil consists of, including the different types of hydrocarbons like paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics as well as small amounts of heteroatoms like sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and metals containing compounds. This module will provide information about processing of crude oil based on involvement of fractional distillation process. Sweetening and cracking processes will also be a part of the present module. Important properties of petroleum products such as octane numeber of gasoline, cetane number of diesel, smoke point of kerosene, etc. are also be involved in the module. Additives to improve the quality of gasoline, diesel are also be included in the present module. Petroleum product analysis will be on the basis of ASTM and IP standard test procedures. You will learn the specifics of how molecules like asphaltenes and resins impact crude oil quality and what analytical tests can quantitatively determine the composition. We will cover essential industry techniques like molecular distillation, SARA analysis, Acids-Bases-Neutrals separation and sequential elution fractionation processes. You will understand how to evaluate key crude oil properties like API gravity, viscosity, pour point, sulfur content and many more. The second half of the course dives deeper into the presence and impacts of metals like vanadium, nickel, iron, and copper in heavier crude oils. You will discover how they affect pricing, transport, and refinery processing through detailed explanations and examples. We will analyze the composition of bitumen and extra-heavy crude petroleum.
The course contains a total of six lectures and each lecture comprises 7 to 8 PowerPoint presentation slides. The course is also designed with three quizzes and three assignments. Students are strongly advised to complete the Crude Oil Chemistry (Module I – III) course by Prof. A. K. Choubey at NSRIC Platform to understand this course content. By the end, you will feel confident discussing the constituents and analysis of a wide range of crude oils. You will have the skills to evaluate oil composition and make decisions related to crude purchasing, blending, refining, and production. Join me to advance your petroleum expertise!
