English Literacy Development (ELD) is a specialized program for English language learners who have had limited opportunities to develop language and literacy skills in their first language. Being literate means having the skills to read, write, speak, understand, and create meaning in English.

Curriculum Framework

OLLB Framework

Observable Language & Literacy Behaviours (OLLB) tracks language proficiency and informs customized instructional programming across 3 broad strands:

1. Oral Strand: Listening, pronunciation & active speaking.

2. Reading Strand: Comprehension, form, style & fluency.

3. Writing Strand: Prewriting, sentence structuring & editing.

Academic Foundations of our ELD Curriculum

Our ELD program is designed following the Ministry of Education, Ontario, Canada curriculum. The ELD program encompasses listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, it develops awareness of the sounds of language, awareness of print, and the relationship between letters and sounds, alongside essential vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension.

The Literacy and English framework promotes the development of critical and creative thinking as well as competence in listening, talking, reading, writing, and the interpersonal and teamwork skills so critical in life and the modern world of work.

ELD ensures that English language learners have the maximum opportunity to become proficient in English and achieve the high levels of literacy expected of world students.
