Dr. Showkatul Islam is the Head of Department (HoD) in area of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Engineering Unit of OE Division. He is also the Senior Faculty in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Engineering Unit of OE Division, NSRIC. Dr. Mohammad Showkatul Islam is a seasoned environmental professional with profound knowledge and experience. He has over 25 years of experience in academia, research, industry and consulting. Dr. Islam is currently working as an environmental analytical chemist at the school of engineering, University of British Columbia – Okanagan Campus. He has a combination of educational background in science and engineering. He has started his career as a faculty in the year 1995 at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, Chittagong, Bangladesh. He then moved to the school of environment, resources and development, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand to complete his M. Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering with Dutch Government Fellowship. Afterward, he joined Curtin University of Technology, Malaysian Campus where he got the opportunity of teaching students from many different countries. He has served as a certified EIA consultant for Curtin Consultancy Services (CCS), Sarawak, Malaysia in the field of environmental
engineering and chemical technology. In 2006, he moved to Saskatoon for his second M. Sc degree in chemical ecology from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He then worked for a short period in the department of food and bioproduct sciences at the University of Saskatchewan before joining his PhD program at the school of engineering, University of Guelph, Canada. He achieved his Doctoral Degree in Engineering in the year 2015. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in engineering at Guelph University before moving to the industry. He also worked as a professional trainer at Educational Program Innovation Center (EPIC), Mississauga, Ontario. He has a strong background in environmental chemical analysis, environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental site assessment (ESA), contaminated site remediation, solid and hazardous waste management, boiler water treatment technology, water and wastewater treatment systems design and operation. He published a good number of papers in refereed journals and conferences.
Dr. Islam holds membership status in many social and environmental forums, associations and professional bodies. Among them, the important professional associations are the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, American Water Works Association, Water Environment Federation and Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering.
